Two train passengers murdered in two days<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Two passengers died in two different economy-
\nclass trains on Monday and Tuesday, forcing railway company PT
\nKereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to engage in further efforts to
\nimprove security on board its trains.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, a 20-year-old woman, Tri Wijayati, was found dead
\nwith severe slash wounds to her neck on the Pasundan train
\nserving the Surabaya-Bandung route.<\/p>\n
The alleged murderer, a 19-year-old snack seller, was arrested
\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
On Monday, passengers of the Padalarang-Cicalengka train were
\nshocked by the murder of a man, later identified as Jojon
\nSarjono, a Cicalengka resident, while the train was running.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the employee of the Hyatt hotel in Bandung was
\nstabbed by an unidentified man, who managed to escape. Jojon died
\nat Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in Bandung. Police have yet to
\nfind leads in the case.<\/p>\n
Concerning Tuesday's murder, police said that Wijayati, an
\nemployee of the well-known Kartikasari cake shop in Bandung, was
\nkilled by Riyanto Wahyudi in a lavatory on the train.<\/p>\n
Sutarto, the victim's elder brother, told reporters at the
\nhospital that his sister developed a stomachache after boarding
\nthe train in Gombong Station in Central Java. The two were on
\ntheir way to Bandung.<\/p>\n
\"I escorted her to the lavatory several times before I heard
\nher scream and saw a man jump out from the lavatory window,\"
\nSutarto said.<\/p>\n
Assisted by the train's dining car staffers, he broke down the
\nlavatory door and found his sister fatally injured with slash
\nwounds to the neck.<\/p>\n
At about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Kiaracondong railway station
\nsecurity guards arrested a teenager in blood-stained clothes and
\nwith a wound to the head.<\/p>\n
The teenager, later identified as Riyanto Wahyudi, was
\nfollowed from the time he boarded the Cibatu-Purwakarta train.
\nLocal security guards called Bandung Station officials, alerting
\nthem of the suspect.<\/p>\n
Riyanto told the police he jumped out of the car after killing
\nthe woman, and, with broken shoulder bones and wounds to his
\nhead, he went to the Lebakrejo railway station and took the train
\nbefore the security guards apprehended him in Kiaracondong.<\/p>\n
He admitted to using a cutting knife to slash Wijayati's neck.
\nHe said he carried out the killing upon the order of Yus Benhard,
\nthe victim's former boyfriend.<\/p>\n
\"He promised me Rp 4 million for the job, and I got Rp 25,000
\nin a down payment.\"<\/p>\n
Benhard became jealous after hearing that Wahyuni was to marry
\nanother man, Riyanto said.<\/p>\n
Benhard is still at large.<\/p>\n
Death penalty<\/p>\n
Chief of the Bandung Police Sr. Supt. Alex Bambang Riatmodjo
\nsaid that Riyanto violated Article 340 of the Criminal Code, and
\nmight be sentenced to death for the first degree murder he
\ncommitted.<\/p>\n
Last April, a 22-year-old woman, identified as Febriana
\nFarida, was stabbed to death on the express Parahyangan train.
\nHer boyfriend suffered serious wounds. Police have yet to declare
\na suspect in the murder.<\/p>\n
One month later, the railway company discovered the death of
\nOloan Sianturi, the father of national gymnast Jonathan Sianturi,
\non the luxurious Argo Bromo train. The case has yet to be
\nclarified.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for PT KAI's Bandung office Akhmad Sujadi admitted
\nthat his company had paid less attention to security on economy-
\nclass trains.<\/p>\n
Two days before Tuesday's killing, Gatot Wibowo, the spokesman
\nfor the railway company, said in an interview with The Jakarta
\nPost that as many as 400 security officers would be deployed at
\n10 big stations in Java in an effort to improve service to
\npassengers.<\/p>\n
A large number of students from Islamic boarding schools have
\nbeen voluntarily helping PT KAI security guards to protect train
\npassengers from possible crime at the stations. (25\/sur)<\/p>",
