Two-tier structure proposed for Asia-Pacific Business Network<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia and Australia have proposed a two-tier
\nstructure for the organization of the Asia-Pacific Business
\nNetwork which will be launched at its inaugural meeting here on
\nAugust 24.<\/p>\n
Both countries, who are the joint organizers of the meeting,
\nproposed that the first tier be a policy development stream
\ninvolving national chambers of commerce and industry and other
\nmajor national industry associations.<\/p>\n
The second tier is suggested to be a business networking
\nstream comprising representatives of individual enterprises.<\/p>\n
The proposal was prepared jointly by Aminuddin, Vice President
\nof the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Trade and
\nInternational Relations, and Harold Clough, President of the
\nAustralian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.<\/p>\n
The Policy Development Stream will be responsible for
\nproviding the organizational infrastructure for the Asia-Pacific
\nBusiness Network (APB Net) such as supplying the resources for
\nmeeting organization, plus preparing reports and the agenda.<\/p>\n
\"The task of the stream members also includes the distillation
\nof views expressed in policy debates during Asia-Pacific Economic
\nCooperation process,\" Husein Aminuddin commented yesterday.<\/p>\n
Linkages<\/p>\n
The Business Networking Stream will comprise the
\nrepresentatives of individual companies who, besides discussing
\npolicy issues, will use their regular meetings to network and
\ndevelop business linkages.<\/p>\n
The idea of the APB Net is to establish a strong and effective
\nmechanism by which businessmen from all APEC member-nations can
\nconsult on important economic and business policy issues. It is
\nalso designed to create a sound and healthy business environment
\nfor APEC members and to expand and to brief businesses on inter-
\nAPEC regulations.<\/p>\n
The forum also is designed to be a medium for enhancing
\ncooperation and creating alliances between big, medium and small
\nscale enterprises. It is also to promote greater trust and
\nimproved partnerships between the public and private business
\nsectors.<\/p>\n
According to Aminuddin, the inaugural meeting of the APB Net
\nwill be attended by the representatives of individual enterprises
\nand not of national business organizations.<\/p>\n
\"But we haven't ruled out the possibility of inviting
\nbusinessmen from countries outside APEC in view of the great
\ninterests in the forum,\" he added.<\/p>\n
APEC, which will hold its second informal leaders meeting here
\nin November, groups Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Hong Kong,
\nIndonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand,
\nPapua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
