Two student skirmishes disrupt city traffic<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of senior high school students were
\ninvolved in two separate street brawls respectively on Jl.
\nSalemba Raya and an intersection on Jl. Pemuda in Central Jakarta
\nyesterday, causing heavy traffic jams on nearby roads.<\/p>\n
The students dispersed only after military personnel and
\ntraffic police officers, who happened to be patrolling the area,
\narrived on the scene. No fatalities were reported and none were
\narrested.<\/p>\n
The brawl on Jl. Salemba involved students from SMA Nusantara
\nand SMA St. Yoseph Senior, both in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Nobody knew how the incident started, but the students were
\nseen flocking from Jl. Diponegoro, a witness said.<\/p>\n
The two groups of students were later involved in a stone and
\nbrick war, he said. Some of them were forced to jump over the
\nmedian wire fence just to avoid the flying stones and bricks.<\/p>\n
Not many motorists dared to pass by the street when the brawl
\ntook place for fear of being hit by the many flying objects.
\nOthers who were unintentionally trapped in the brawl were forced
\nto leave the area as quickly as possible, thereby causing a major
\ntraffic jam.<\/p>\n
The situation eased only after two patrolling military
\npersonnel arrived on the scene.<\/p>\n
Some people who stood along the roadside were seen helping one
\nof the servicemen chase the students.<\/p>\n
\"They'll get a lesson only if they are caught by the
\nservicemen or hit by passing cars,\" said Agung, a student of the
\nUniversity of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"They're all irresponsible people because their acts also put
\nother people at risk,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The other after-school brawl took place at the intersection of
\nJl. Pemuda, Jl. Pramuka, Jl. Ahmad Yani and Jl. Rawamangun.<\/p>\n
Dozens of students were seen getting off of a Mayasari Bakti
\nbus plying the Kampung Rambutan-Tanjung Priuk route.<\/p>\n
They immediately became entangled in a brawl with some
\nstudents who were sitting on a nearby roadside, apparently
\nwaiting for them, Suaeb, a witness said.<\/p>\n
Suaeb said he was forced to hide between two trucks to avoid
\nbeing hit by the flying stones.<\/p>\n
