Two servicemen arrested in disco crackdown<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least two armed servicemen, including an
\nintelligence officer, were arrested in a raid carried out by the
\nCity Military Police at the Hailai discotheque next to Ancol
\nDreamland in North Jakarta early Saturday.<\/p>\n
The 1.30 am raid, carried out by the elite Mobile Brigade of
\nthe police force, seized two guns - an FN 46 and a Colt Barreta -
\nalong with 25 bullets, a walkie-talkie, seven dried marijuana
\ncigarettes and 10 ecstasy pills, according to the commander of
\nthe military police garrison and leader of the raid, Lt. Col.
\nOtte Ruchiyat.<\/p>\n
He said the two arrested servicemen were identified as
\nintelligence officer Jef B. and First Lieutenant F.M. Sim.<\/p>\n
The Colt Barreta gun, and its 15 bullets, was confiscated from
\nJef. \"If found guilty, this officer could spend two weeks in
\njail,\" Ruchiyat said.<\/p>\n
Another serviceman, identified only as Second Sergeant Sut.,
\nescaped a few minutes after being apprehended,<\/p>\n
Ruchiyat pledged to have the suspect, whose is well known,
\narrested soon.<\/p>\n
\"These servicemen have violated the rules of the Armed Forces
\nfor carrying guns illegally in such a public place and being at
\nan improper place,\" said officer Ruchiyat.<\/p>\n
\"They were at the place not because of being assigned there by
\ntheir superiors,\" he said.<\/p>\n
It remains unknown how many civilians were arrested during the
\ntwo-hour raid, which started at around 1.35 a.m. at one of the
\ncity's favorite haunts for middle-and high-class
\ndiscothequegoers.<\/p>\n
Sources said that at least two civilians were taken for
\nfurther interrogation for allegedly possessing Ecstasy and other
\nillegal substances.<\/p>\n
One of them was identified as Yosep Hungan, a newcomer in a
\ntelevision serial. Several Ecstasy pills were confiscated from
\nhim.<\/p>\n
Following the recent death of a senior police officer at a
\ndiscotheque here and an increasing trend for many servicemen to
\nfrequent such places to earn extra money, the Armed Forces
\nheadquarters has reminded all personnel to avoid any
\nentertainment places.<\/p>\n
Military Police Chief Brig. Gen. Syamsu said early last month
\nthat no members of the Armed Forces, including the police, are
\nallowed to enter the so-called prohibited places.<\/p>\n
Like many overclass discotheques in town, the Hailai is often
\nused by its customers as an arena for illegal business, such as
\nprostitution and drug dealing.<\/p>\n
Top celebrities and businessmen have often been caught in
\nraids on the discotheques for allegedly participating in such
\nillegal activities.<\/p>\n
\"We'll continue to carry out such operations throughout the
