Two resign to avoid corruption charges<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Two middle-ranking Tangerang Regency and
\nMayoralty officials submitted their resignations yesterday in a
\nbid to avoid accusations of corruption.<\/p>\n
The two were identified as Agus Rachmat, the head of the
\nregency's regional development board, and Muhaemin, the head of
\nthe mayoralty's parks and funerals office.<\/p>\n
Agus is the brother-in-law of regency secretary M.H. Thamrin,
\nwhile Muhaemin is the younger brother of Tangerang Mayor Djakaria
\nMahmud.<\/p>\n
Agus admitted yesterday that he had resigned to avoid
\naccusations that he was recruited nepotistically by Thamrin and
\nhad thereafter frequently engaged in corrupt activities.<\/p>\n
\"It's better for me to resign now rather than be dismissed at
\na later date,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said there were still two relatives of Thamrin working as
\nofficials in his administration. The two are secretary of the
\nregency regional development board Muchtar Lutfi and deputy head
\nof economic affairs Dedy Kusnadi.<\/p>\n
\"But my resignation should not influence them and they don't
\nnecessarily have to follow my example,\" Agus said. He now plans
\nto return to his former profession as a lecturer at Bandung
\nInstitute of Technology.<\/p>\n
Agus explained that he decided to resign as he had held his
\ncurrent position for five years. \"Usually this position is held
\nonly in three years,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that he had informed Regent Agus Djunara of his
\nintention to resign earlier this month.<\/p>\n
According to Suparman, the mayoralty administration assistant,
\nMuhaemin sent his resignation letter to the Governor of West
\nJava.<\/p>\n
\"The letter has yet to be answered,\" Suparman added.<\/p>\n
Djakaria Mahmud earlier denied that he had assisted his
\nbrother rise through the ranks in the council, saying he had
\ngained promotion on his own merit.<\/p>\n
\"Muhaemin started as a section head, was promoted to division
\nhead and now heads the office.\"<\/p>\n
Tangerang Mayoralty Council deputy chairman Ruchiat recently
\nthreatened to resign if corrupt officials did not step down from
