        "content": "<p>Two reporters to be questioned<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: Police planned on Monday to summon two reporters<br>\nfrom the local Bernas daily as witnesses in their questioning of<br>\nSoekardjo Wilardjito -- a former aide of Sukarno who claimed that<br>\nthe founding president was intimidated into relinquishing power<br>\nto Soeharto.<\/p>\n<p>Yogyakarta police chief Col. Bani Siswono also said that a<br>\nnumber of other witnesses had been summoned and questioned. The<br>\ntwo reporters were the first to report Soekardjo's claim.<\/p>\n<p>However, the director of Yogyakarta Legal Aid Office, Budi<br>\nSantoso, said the two reporters had every right not to meet the<br>\nsummons.<\/p>\n<p>\"The journalistic code of ethics states they can refuse the<br>\npolice summons. Their profession obligates them to protect their<br>\nsources,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"If police want to summon reporters as witnesses in a case,<br>\nthey should abide by the existing mechanism. Whether or not their<br>\nsummons is met depends entirely on the professional organization<br>\nof which the reporters are members,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists Putut Wiryawan and Setia Krisna confirmed they<br>\nhave received the summons, but Putut said the documents should<br>\nhave been addressed to their chief editor.<\/p>\n<p>\"Reports that are published in a newspaper are the<br>\nresponsibility of the chief editor, not the reporters,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Soekardjo has claimed that on March 11, 1966, he saw four (not<br>\nthree as widely stated in historical books) generals visiting<br>\nSukarno at the Bogor Presidential Palace.<\/p>\n<p>Soekardjo also claimed to have seen two general threatening<br>\nSukarno into signing a document which granted wide-ranged power<br>\nto then Army minister Soeharto to take various steps to restore<br>\norder in the country. Indonesia was at the time traumatized by a<br>\nbloody attempted coup blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party<br>\n(PKI).<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto dissolved and outlawed the party and its affiliates.<br>\n(23\/440)<\/p>",
