Two phone fraudsters face jail<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A state-prosecutor asked the Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court yesterday to sentence two foreigners to 10 months
\nimprisonment for allegedly abusing cellular phone numbers
\nbelonging to seven Indonesians.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Ohoi Ulun said the defendants, Ng Chee Leong, 28,
\nof Malaysia and Hasnat Ahmad Varya, 25, of Pakistan were charged
\nwith Article 12 of the 1989 Law on Telecommunication pertaining
\nto violations of telecommunication rules.<\/p>\n
Ohoi dropped an earlier charge of pulse theft under Article
\n365 of the Criminal Code for lack of evidence.<\/p>\n
Chee Leong and Varya gained access to the seven cellular phone
\nnumbers using sophisticated tools such as hand-made cellular
\nphone, Ohoi said.<\/p>\n
They were arrested at a hotel in Mangga Besar district in
\nApril by police after the seven people complained that their
\ncellular phone bills in March were unusually large.<\/p>\n
Police said the defendants had made the seven numbers
\navailable for long distance calls to phone users in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Ohoi underscored their admission of guilt in court among the
\nmitigating factors for the defendants.<\/p>\n
The trial was adjourned until Thursday to hear the judges'
