        "content": "<p>Two people killed in every high-rise construction<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The construction of high-rise buildings in<br>\nJakarta takes its toll, with at least two lives claimed at each<br>\nconstruction, an official in charge of health problems and work<br>\nsafety of PT Waskita Karya said.<\/p>\n<p>The figure could be higher because what was revealed by the<br>\nofficial, Zainal Bhakti, is only the number of victims working on<br>\nprojects built by the company.<\/p>\n<p>Zainal said most of the fatal accidents were due to<br>\ncarelessness and tiredness on the part of the construction<br>\nworkers.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Many of the accidents that claimed lives happened because the<br>\nworkers did not pay due attention to safety regulations,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said the figure was based on the company&apos;s records of high-<br>\nrise constructions over the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>Zainal made the revelation after lecturing at a seminar<br>\nentitled Safety and Health Problems in Building Construction<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The one-day seminar was held by the Jakarta Public Works<br>\nOffice in cooperation with PT Astek, the state-run insurance<br>\ncompany.<\/p>\n<p>He said had the workers paid proper attention to safety<br>\nprocedures, fatal accidents could have been avoided.<\/p>\n<p>Zainal said many construction workers were &quot;reluctant&quot; to use<br>\nsafety belts and to wear rubber soled shoes when at work.<\/p>\n<p>PT Waskita Karya is currently constructing a 46-floor<br>\nbuilding, which will be the highest building in the capital,<br>\nAntara reported.<\/p>\n<p>An Astek official, Sukarna Suriatmadja said 15,075 people<br>\nconstruction workers were killed while working on various<br>\nprojects over the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>He said the figure could be higher because the workers were<br>\nonly those covered by life insurance policies.
