Two people killed in every high-rise construction<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The construction of high-rise buildings in
\nJakarta takes its toll, with at least two lives claimed at each
\nconstruction, an official in charge of health problems and work
\nsafety of PT Waskita Karya said.<\/p>\n
The figure could be higher because what was revealed by the
\nofficial, Zainal Bhakti, is only the number of victims working on
\nprojects built by the company.<\/p>\n
Zainal said most of the fatal accidents were due to
\ncarelessness and tiredness on the part of the construction
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
"Many of the accidents that claimed lives happened because the
\nworkers did not pay due attention to safety regulations," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said the figure was based on the company's records of high-
\nrise constructions over the last five years.<\/p>\n
Zainal made the revelation after lecturing at a seminar
\nentitled Safety and Health Problems in Building Construction
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The one-day seminar was held by the Jakarta Public Works
\nOffice in cooperation with PT Astek, the state-run insurance
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
He said had the workers paid proper attention to safety
\nprocedures, fatal accidents could have been avoided.<\/p>\n
Zainal said many construction workers were "reluctant" to use
\nsafety belts and to wear rubber soled shoes when at work.<\/p>\n
PT Waskita Karya is currently constructing a 46-floor
\nbuilding, which will be the highest building in the capital,
\nAntara reported.<\/p>\n
An Astek official, Sukarna Suriatmadja said 15,075 people
\nconstruction workers were killed while working on various
\nprojects over the last decade.<\/p>\n
He said the figure could be higher because the workers were
\nonly those covered by life insurance policies. (bas)<\/p>",
