Two more held in Beng Seng case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two other suspects in last year's killing of
\nentertainment businessman Darmansyah Sujadi, alias Nyo Beng Seng,
\nwere arrested by city police last Friday.<\/p>\n
The two, identified as Apiu and Eng San, were caught last
\nFriday in Jakarta, a reliable source told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Two people, Agiono and Sudartono, have already been sentenced
\nto 20 years and 15 years, respectively, for stabbing Beng Seng to
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna confirmed the
\narrest of Apiu and Eng San in a phone conversation yesterday, but
\nrefused to give further details.<\/p>\n
\"We are still interrogating the two to find out their roles
\nand motives in the homicide,\" Iman said.<\/p>\n
The secretary of the City Police Crime Investigation
\nDirectorate, Lt. Col. Edi Darnadi, said yesterday that Apiu and
\nEng San are now being questioned about their roles in the murder
\nof 57-year-old Beng Seng, a godfather in the gambling business,
\nboth here and overseas.<\/p>\n
Other people questioned by the police include Beng Seng's
\nlawyer Leo Kartono and the victim's second wife, Tuti Sulastri.<\/p>\n
National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman Astrosemitro has ordered
\nthe arrests of seven people in connection with the murder.<\/p>\n
The other suspects, as mentioned in the trials of Agiono and
\nSudartono, include Apiu, Eng San, Hong Lie, A Lay and Avok,
\nBanurusman said.<\/p>\n
From his \"headquarters\" in Singapore, Hong Lie challenged the
\npolice by saying he would testify when the police begin to
\nquestion lawyer Leo Kartono, whom Hong Lie has accused of
\ninstigating the murder plot.<\/p>\n
The North Jakarta District Court sentenced Agiono and
\nSudartono in August to 20 years and 15 years imprisonment for
\nmurdering Beng Seng in front of Tuti's mansion in Pluit on April
\n15, 1994.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecution at the trial of Agiono and
\nSudartono, the murder was carried out upon the instructions of
\nBeng Seng's business competitor Hong Lie, following an argument
\nbetween them over Hong Lie's debt of US$3.2 million to Beng Seng.<\/p>\n
Beng Seng owned a number of nightclubs, massage parlors and
\nother business firms, including the PT Irama Tara recording
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
He was also a renowned gambler and a contact person for
\nIndonesians who wanted to gamble at exclusive gambling venues in
\nMacao, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Malaysia and Australia. (bsr)<\/p>",
