Two more die in flooding<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Two more people were killed on
\nSaturday and the body of another person reported missing was
\nfound, bringing the death toll in the flooding which has hit
\nMakassar since Thursday to five.<\/p>\n
The latest two fatalities, residents of Tanjung Alang, were
\nswept away by the waters of Jembatan Merah River. The victims
\nhave not yet been identified.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the body of Rifal, alias Cunding, who was reported
\nmissing on Friday, was found by a rescue team in the Pannampu
\nwaterway.<\/p>\n
One of two people killed in the flooding on Friday was
\nidentified as Rosminini, while the other victim remains
\nunidentified.<\/p>\n
The water which reached two meters in height on Friday has
\nbegun to recede in the flood-hit areas of Makassar. However,
\nresidents were still seeking refuge on higher ground and trying
\nto save their belongings on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Makassar Mayor Amiruddin Maula earlier said that tens of
\nthousands of people had to be rescued when their homes were
\ninundated by the flood water.<\/p>\n
Heavy rain has been blamed for the worst flooding in
\nMakassar's history.<\/p>\n
The head of the local meteorological and geophysics agency,
\nEdi Waluyo, said rainfall this year averaged 391 millimeters a
\nday, compared to 220 millimeters in 1999. (27\/sur)<\/p>",
