Two men caught with illegal guns<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two men have been detained for recent firearms
\noffenses, the police have announced.<\/p>\n
The first suspect, Edi Suhendar, 32, was caught red-handed in
\na room at Hotel Sofyan in Tebet, South Jakarta, last Friday while
\ntrying to sell a 38-mm Colt and six bullets for Rp 15 million
\n(US$1,150) to a plainclothes officer, city police spokesman Lt.
\nCol. E. Aritonang said Monday.<\/p>\n
\"We've received tips that he had been involved in a series of
\nillegal gun transactions,\" Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
During questioning, Edi said he obtained the pistol from a gun
\nbroker named Dani, 40.<\/p>\n
\"He said he bought the gun for only Rp 1.5 million with seven
\nbullets, one of which he used to test the weapon,\" Aritonang
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Dani is still at large.<\/p>\n
The second suspect, Amir Machmud Syarifuddin, 49, was
\nhandcuffed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport with a 9-mm
\nP.A. Knall gun plus 25 bullets last Tuesday shortly after his
\narrival from Germany.<\/p>\n
According to deputy National Police spokesman, Col. Bambang
\nHaryoko, Amir's gun was spotted in his bag when it went through
\nthe X-ray scanner.<\/p>\n
\"He said he acquired the gun in Germany,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Both cases are still under investigation.<\/p>\n
Thousands of city residents, mostly of Chinese descent, have
\nreportedly bought guns for self-defense following the mid-May
