Two killed by man with sickle<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A top police official has defended Tuesday's
\nshooting of an allegedly insane man by security personnel.<\/p>\n
Two people were killed during the incident in Pulogadung, East
\nJakarta, and three others were wounded.<\/p>\n
According to city police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata
\nyesterday, the shooting by police and military personnel was
\nacceptable because they had no other option available at the time
\nunless they wanted to see more people killed or wounded.<\/p>\n
\"In this case, if our officers did not shoot the man, the man
\nmight have wounded more people. After all, this man brutally
\nkilled a woman at the scene,\" said Hamami.<\/p>\n
Junirin, 45, was shot by soldiers of a local garrison and
\npolice officers from the Pulogadung subprecinct near his home on
\nJl. Palad on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Ten bullets were removed from his legs but he was still alive,
\nat least as of today, said city police spokesman Lt. Col. E.
\nAritonang.<\/p>\n
According to Aritonang, the law enforcers fired in an attempt
\nto paralyze Junirin, who kept attacking the officers after
\nsporadically trying to wound people around him with a sickle.<\/p>\n
Prior to the arrival of the officers, Junirin first slashed
\nJuriah, 45, and Sur, 50, he said.<\/p>\n
Juriah died at the scene while Sur died later in Persahabatan
\nhospital, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Junirin then wounded an unidentified man, who was slashed with
\nthe sickle while trying to stop Junirin from attacking others, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The unidentified victim is still being treated in hospital.<\/p>\n
\"So far, we strongly believe Junirin is insane. If not, how
\ncould he attack people just like that?\" said the spokesman.<\/p>\n
During the clash between Junirin and the officers, at least
\ntwo men, Eko Mariko, 29, and Subur, 19, were wounded by soldiers'
\nstray bullets.<\/p>\n
\"That was really an accident. The soldiers did not mean to
\nshoot the two.<\/p>\n
\"But, sometimes a bullet ricochets,\" Aritonang said and
\nexpressed sympathy for the victims.<\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation revealed that Junirin was involved
\nin a heated argument with his wife, threatened to attack her with
\nthe sickle but left the house and started threatening and
\nattacking other people, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
\"But it isn't final yet. Everything is still under
\ninvestigation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday, Junirin was being detained at Pulogadung
\nPolice station for intense interrogation. (cst)<\/p>",
