Two Istiqlal bombers get 3-year jail term<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A judge at the Central Jakarta District Court
\nhas sentenced Uci Sanusi and Nurly, alias Rully, to three years
\nin jail for their involvement in the April bombing of the
\nIstiqlal Grand Mosque.<\/p>\n
\"Both defendants are guilty of possessing, carrying and
\ndetonating bombs,\" presiding judge I Gde Sumitra said in the
\nhearing on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Fachruddin demanded in the previous hearing that
\nthe court sentence both defendants to three and a half years in
\njail.<\/p>\n
Sumitra said the two defendants had violated article 1 of the
\n1951 Emergency Law, which carried a maximum sentence of 20 years
\nin jail.<\/p>\n
He said both had admitted their wrongdoings and had acted
\npolitely during the course of the prosecution.<\/p>\n
\"But, still, their actions have brought anxiety to the
\npeople,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sumitra said both defendants were involved in a plan to blow
\nup the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia after the main defendant
\nin the trail, Surya Setiawan, alias Wawan, asked them to do so.<\/p>\n
\"Both defendants then attended a meeting at Wawan's house in
\nTangerang on April 15 to discuss the bombing plan,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the defendants and other five suspects carried out the
\nbombing on April 19.<\/p>\n
\"Rully was told by Wawan to activate the bomb on the mosque's
\nground floor, while the others made their way to their own
\npositions around the mosque at the time of the explosion,\"
\nSumitra said.<\/p>\n
Uci, 17, was standing guard outside the mosque to prevent
\npeople from being suspicious of Rully, 18, who was responsible
\nfor detonating the bomb, the judge said.<\/p>\n
The explosion severely damaged the wall of the mosque's ground
\nfloor, while all the windows in the offices of the Indonesian
\nUlema Council and the Indonesian Islamic Women's Organization
\nConference were shattered. Five people were injured following the
\nexplosion.<\/p>\n
The court sentenced Wawan in a separate hearing last October
\nto 38 months in jail for his key role in the explosion.<\/p>\n
Other defendants -- Suradi, Atin, Jamhuri Litamahuputty and
\nAnton -- are being tried at separate hearings.<\/p>\n
Sumitra said the police's Forensic Laboratory concluded that
\nthe bomb used in the April bombing had a powerful capacity.<\/p>\n
Upon hearing the judge's verdict, the defendants' lawyer,
\nHotlan Sitorus, said his clients were considering filing an
\nappeal to the Jakarta High Court. (asa)<\/p>",
