Geronimo Malabanan said the fighting erupted on Saturday<br>\nwhen navy sailors chased two speedboats off the southern province<br>\nof Tawi-Tawi, 1,020 kilometers south of Manila.<\/p>\n<p>Malabanan said the two speedboats were spotted heading towards<br>\nthe Philippine-Malaysian border at full speed, prompting navy<br>\nsailors to launch pursuit.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Our men fired two warning shots, but instead of stopping, the<br>\ngunmen returned fire triggering a shootout,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Malabanan said investigators were still determining if the two<br>\nfatalities were among the group of gunmen who kidnapped three<br>\nIndonesian crewmen of a tugboat, who were abducted off the<br>\nMalaysian state of Sabah on March 30.<\/p>\n<p>According to Malaysian authorities, the abductors allegedly<br>\nfled towards Tawi-Tawi province. --DPA<\/p>",
