Two foreigners jailed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta District Court sent two
\nforeigners to prison for five months each for accessing cellular
\nphone numbers belonging to seven Indonesians.<\/p>\n
The panel of judges found Ng Chee Leong, 28, of Malaysia and
\nHasnat Ahmad Varya, 25, of Pakistan guilty of violating Article
\n12 of the 1989 Law on Telecommunications pertaining to violations
\nof telecommunication rules.<\/p>\n
The sentence was half of what government prosecutor Ohoi Ulun
\nhad demanded from the court.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor had dropped an earlier charge of theft under
\narticle 365 of the Criminal Code for lack of evidence.<\/p>\n
Chee Leong and Varya gained access to the seven cellular phone
\nnumbers using sophisticated tools such as a handmade cellular
\nphone, according to the police.<\/p>\n
They were arrested at a hotel in Mangga Besar district in
\nApril by police after the seven owners of the telephone accounts
\ncomplained that their bills in March were unusually large.<\/p>\n
Police said the defendants had made the seven numbers
\navailable for long distance calls to phone users in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The judges said they had decided on a light sentence because
\nboth defendants had admitted their guilt and shown remorse in
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
