Two candidates selected for UI rector<\/p>\n

Two people remain in the running for the rectorship of the
\nUniversity of Indonesia (UI) after its board of trustees dropped
\ntwo candidates during a vote on Monday.<\/p>\n
UI acting rector Usman Chatib Warsa, who is also a professor
\nof medicine, and Martani Huseini, who is the dean of UI's School
\nof Social and Political Sciences, are the remaining candidates.<\/p>\n
One of the Board members, Ascobat Gani, said that each of the
\nremaining candidates won six votes, while Djoko Hartanto managed
\nfive votes and Jimly Asshidiqie two votes.<\/p>\n
The criteria for the vote was based on a set of academic and
\nnon academic prerequisites.<\/p>\n
\"Managerial competence, among other things, is deemed as the
\nmain criteria for the selection,\" Gani said.<\/p>\n
The Board of Trustees also thoroughly examined the candidates'
\nperformance and presentation at the second round of the fit-and-
\nproper test.<\/p>\n
The nominees presented their views on human resources and
\ndevelopment, study programs and budget plans in response to the
\nboard's queries.<\/p>\n
Asked about the effectiveness of UI's diploma program, Usman
\nsaid it was not the major goal of the university despite the fact
\nit contributed about a quarter of its total income.<\/p>\n
\"So, to some extent the diploma program is still needed as
\nit's still worth selling,\" Usman said, adding that some of the
\ndiploma programs would be stopped.<\/p>\n
However, he said that diploma programs and undergraduate
\nstudies that complimented each other, such as the broadcasting
\ndiploma and communications undergraduate degree, should be
\nmaintained.<\/p>\n
Usman and Martani will debate all the issues in public on
\nTuesday in the UI's convention hall. On Aug. 14, the board will
\ndecide who will be the new rector.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the UI's Student's Consultative Assembly (MPM)
\nvoiced concerns about the election process.<\/p>\n
\"We are worried the process is based on subjective
\nconsiderations,\" MPM chairman Meidy Ferdiansyah said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Gani said the board was free of any external
\ninfluences that would affect its decision.<\/p>\n
Board head Mochtar Riady said that only 19 of the Board's 21
\nmembers voted as the minister of education, representing the
\ngovernment, was absent, while Usman could not exercise his voting
\nrights as acting rector.<\/p>\n
\"So far no candidates have managed to get a majority vote,\"
\nMochtar said, underlining the significance of fairness during the
\nelection.<\/p>",
