Two arrested for stealing train cables<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police have said they caught two youngsters red-
\nhanded stealing train traffic system cables from railway tracks
\nin Depok late on Sunday.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Lt. Col. Edward Aritonang said on Monday
\nthat the two suspects, identified as Dedi, 15, and Nasrun, 16,
\nboth residents of Pancoran Mas in Depok, admitted to cutting the
\ncables at the Pondok Cina railway station in Depok but denied
\nthey intended to cause a train crash.<\/p>\n
\"They admitted stealing five meters of cable and claimed that
\nit was on their own initiative,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A packed Jabotabek electric train (KRL) was hit late on Friday
\nby a KRL Patas Pakuan train -- both plying the Jakarta-Bogor
\nroute -- from behind at the Pondok Cina station, injuring 20
\npassengers, although none seriously.<\/p>\n
\"The KRL Jabotabek stopped at the station to let passengers
\nalight and board, but suddenly the other train hit it from behind
\nbecause the traffic lights were not functioning properly,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The accident left hundreds of passengers stranded, but no
\nfatalities were reported.<\/p>\n
The cause of the collision was still being investigated by
\nlocal police in cooperation with officials of state railway
\ncompany Perumka, Aritonang said, adding that it was rare for
\ntrains serving the same route to collide.<\/p>\n
When they checked the signal cables, investigators found they
\nhad been deliberately cut but it was too early to claim it was
\nsabotage, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Depok police then combed the area and spotted the two
\nteenagers attempting to cut other cables in Depok Baru early on
\nSunday.\"<\/p>\n
Police, however, suspected they were not working alone.<\/p>\n
The cables were reportedly sold to a man in Depok for only Rp
\n5,000 (45 U.S. cents) per meter, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
He said police were expecting to arrest other teenagers
\nallegedly involved in the racket.<\/p>\n
He believed the teenagers were attempting to get easy money
\nfor cigarettes and alcohol.<\/p>\n
\"The arrested thieves admitted they and their friends chose
\nthe jobs as it was an easy way to get money to enable them to
