Two arrested for motorcycle thefts<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two men were arrested separately in East Jakarta
\non Tuesday for allegedly attempting to steal motorcycles.<\/p>\n
During police questioning, the two suspects, identified as
\nSuyadi and Riawanto, claimed to be members of the military, a
\npolice source said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Suyadi claimed to be a member of a military transportation
\nunit here and the other suspect claimed to be a member of a
\ncavalry unit, said the source.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday afternoon, the two were being held separately
\nat the East Jakarta Police precinct and Jakarta Police
\nHeadquarters.<\/p>\n
According to the police source, who asked for anonymity,
\nSuyadi was arrested at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, while Riawanto at about
\n11:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Suyadi was arrested after allegedly trying to steal a
\nmotorcycle owned by Deddy Darmansyah. The motorcycle was parked
\nin front of the Jatinegara market in East Jakarta, the source
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Deddy, who reportedly saw Suyadi trying to start the
\nmotorcycle, quickly ran after him and screamed for help, the
\npolice said.<\/p>\n
An angry crowd beat up Suyadi before handing him over to the
\nEast Jakarta Police precinct.<\/p>\n
Riawanto was arrested by members of the Air Force at Halim
\nPerdanakusuma Air Base in East Jakarta while allegedly trying to
\nenter the air base on a stolen motorcycle, the police said.<\/p>\n
He claimed to have obtained the bike from a motorist he
\nstopped near Prumpung Bridge in Jatinegara. Passing himself off
\nas a police officer, he said he accused the motorcyclist, later
\nidentified as Sigit Sugianto, of having violated a traffic
\nregulation.<\/p>\n
According to the source, Riawanto hit the victim, a resident
\nof a police dormitory in Cipinang, before taking his motorcycle
\nand driving to Halim, where he was arrested for entering the
\nrestricted area without proper identification.<\/p>\n
The Air Force then handed him over to city police, who had
\nreceived a report from the motorcycle's owner.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang confirmed the
\narrests yesterday but refused to comment further.<\/p>\n
\"We're still contacting the related bodies to check whether
\nthe two suspects are really military members,\" he said.<\/p>\n
If they prove to be soldiers, they will be handed over to the
\nmilitary police for further investigation, said Aritonang.<\/p>\n
The police spokesman, however, did not explain why it would
\ntake time to confirm the suspects' status given the technology of
