Twisted media reports deplored<\/p>\n
BOGOR, West Java (JP): The civil emergency administrator in
\nMaluku, Governor Saleh Latuconsina, has urged the National Press
\nCouncil to help the media in "telling the truth and being
\nobjective in reporting the Maluku case".<\/p>\n
"Since the ministry of information no longer exists, we would
\nlike to ask the National Press Council to help us deal with the
\ntwisted media reporting on Maluku, he told a session with the
\npress council's chairman Atmakusumah Asraatmadja here late on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
"Many national media have run stories that are completely at
\nodds with the true facts and they have a tendency to exploit
\nincidents which could arouse anger in both the Muslim and
\nChristian camps," he said.<\/p>\n
Monday's session was part of a meeting titled Journalism in
\nConflict organized by the British Council, National Press Board
\nand Independent Journalists' Alliance (AJI).<\/p>\n
"It's hard to keep things under control in Maluku with so many
\nmisleading reports," the governor complained.<\/p>\n
Latuconsina further singled out a Jakarta-based daily which in
\nseveral of its editions had employed bombastic titles and partial
\nreporting.<\/p>\n
Atmakusumah shared Latuconsina view, saying that he had
\n"softly criticized the daily for its writing".<\/p>\n
"Besides that, I have also noticed several local (Maluku)
\nmedia carrying provocative reports," Atmakusumah said.<\/p>\n
He further said that a new system for dealing with media bias
\nneeded to be set in place.<\/p>\n
"The governor could fax copies of media reports that are
\nconsidered provocative to the press council so as to help us deal
\nwith the problem," Atmakusmah added. (edt\/49)<\/p>",
