Twilite Orchestra sets stage for Popstravaganza Concert<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Fans may have to wait weeks until they can see
\nthe Star Wars prequel, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
\nhere. But at least they can entertain themselves with the movie's
\ntheme music at Twilite Orchestra Popstravaganza Concert next
\nweek.<\/p>\n
The orchestra's conductor, Addie MS, said they would play the
\nStar Wars' theme to open its June 25 concert at Teater Tanah
\nAirku in Taman Mini Indonesia park, East Jakarta. The movie's
\ntheme, composed by the former conductor of the Boston Pops
\nOrchestra, John Williams, made every scene in the Star Wars
\nmovies come alive, he added.<\/p>\n
The concert has been arranged as a regular event to be held at
\nTeater Taman Airku every two months, starting this month to
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
\"I've dreamed about this for eight years since we formed
\ntogether. All this time, we performed in different places,
\ndepending on orders. It's not healthy and passive ... Abroad, the
\nperformances are planned even a year before,\" Addie told
\nreporters at a press conference this week.<\/p>\n
The concert will be Addie's second performance at Teater Tanah
\nAirku. Last year, Twilite Orchestra, along with musician Djaduk
\nFerianto, collaborated to arrange Opera Anoman's music and was
\nperformed at the theater.<\/p>\n
Addie said he believed the regular performance of classical
\nmusic would not reduce the quality of music.<\/p>\n
He admitted, however, that he saw how routine activities could
\nharm musicians, but added that it mostly happened to those who
\nplayed serious classical music at hotels or restaurants. The
\nmusicians, he said, were distracted by activities surrounding
\nthem -- people laughing or talking -- while they had to
\nconcentrate on playing serious music.<\/p>\n
\"But it's different with routine recitals or concerts
\nperformed in a hall where nothing will disturb the musicians'
\nconcentration. In fact, regularity is the main requirement for a
\ngood orchestra,\" Addie said.<\/p>\n
Popstravaganza -- after pops and extravaganza -- is selected
\nas the main theme for the concert.<\/p>\n
Addie explained that pops were programs or repertoires of a
\nconcert that performs popular classical music, movie theme songs,
\nopera, musical drama or pop songs that have symphonic
\narrangements. Extravaganza itself, he said, was simply referred
\nto a lavish atmosphere.<\/p>\n
Pops itself was pioneered by former Boston Pops Opera
\nconductor Arthur Fiedler, from 1930 to 1980, and continued by
\nJohn Williams, from 1982 to 1990. In the U.S., other orchestras
\nwhich perform pops programs include the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra
\nled by conductor Erich Kunzel and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
\nled by conductor John Mauceri.<\/p>\n
For next week's show, the 115 members of Twilite Orchestra,
\nincluding 50 singers from the Twilite Chorus, will present about
\n15 compositions during the two-hour show.<\/p>\n
Among the compositions are Alan Menken's Beauty and the Beast,
\nPeter Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker: Waltz of the Flowers, Andrew
\nLloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera Selections, Igor
\nStravinsky's Firebird Suite: Lullaby & Finale and Verdi's Aida:
\nTriumphal March.<\/p>\n
Aning Katamsi will sing some compositions, such as Eben? Ne
\nAndro Lontano from Alfredo Catalani's La Wally opera and The
\nMusic of the Night from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart's
\nThe Phantom of the Opera. Tenor Johnson Hutagalung will perform
\nNessun Dorma! from Giacomo Puccine's Turandot opera and Edoardo
\ndi Capua's O Sole Mio.<\/p>\n
A day prior to the show, the orchestra will also stage an hour
\nperformance, titled Konser Kita (Our Concert), for certain
\nelementary school students.<\/p>\n
To watch the show, students are required to create their own
\ntickets worth Rp 2,000 each, to bring about art appreciation. The
\nmoney collected will then be handed back to the school to, among
\nother things, buy books on music.(ste)<\/p>",
