        "content": "<p>TV stations warned against influx of foreign values<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Privately-owned television stations should air<br>\nmore locally produced programs as a move to contain the influx of<br>\nforeign values, a senior legislator said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Aisyah Aminy, chief of the House of Representatives Commission<br>\nI which oversees information affairs, said all private TV<br>\nstations should fill 80 percent of their air time with local<br>\nprograms like the state-owned TV station, TVRI, already does.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If a station airs to many foreign programs, it will virtually<br>\nbecome the foreigners mouthpiece,&quot; she warned.<\/p>\n<p>Aisyah, a legislator from the United Development Party (PPP),<br>\nmade the remark in connection with the first anniversary of the<br>\nprivately-owned TV station Indosiar Visual Mandiri.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has one state-owned TV stations and five private<br>\nones, RCTI, ANteve, SCTV, TPI and Indosiar.<\/p>\n<p>The government suggests that all television stations fill in<br>\n80 percent of their broadcasting time with locally-made programs,<br>\nif their finances permit it.<\/p>\n<p>About 40 percent of Indosiar&apos;s programs are foreign, according<br>\nto Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Owned by the Salim Group, Indosiar got a thumbs-up for airing<br>\nlocal cultural shows, particularly Javanese shadow puppet<br>\nperformances.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This sort of program is excellent because it helps promote<br>\nlocal cultures,&quot; Aisyah said. &quot;But I think it would be a good<br>\nidea to broadcast it in prime time.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>President director of Indosiar Anky Handoko says the local<br>\ncultural shows aim to improve viewers&apos; appreciation of local<br>\ncultures.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&apos;s not a matter of meeting the government&apos;s requirement for<br>\nprivate TV stations to air locally-produced programs,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Indosiar has been criticized for featuring Javanese and<br>\nSundanese culture more than the cultures of any other ethnic<br>\ngroup.<\/p>\n<p>Anky argued that the Javanese and Sundanese are Indonesia&apos;s<br>\ndominant ethnic groups but added that the station has no<br>\nintention to neglect other ethnic groups.
