        "content": "<p>Turtle meat and religion<\/p>\n<p>From Bali Post<\/p>\n<p>Lately, sidewalk vendors of turtle meat satay have reappeared<br>\nin Denpasar and in the northern part of Badung, Bali. These<br>\nparticular food stands had disappeared for almost three years.<br>\nBut now turtle delicacies are readily available on special<br>\noccasions or events where large crowds are present.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, turtles are known to be protected species under the<br>\nlaw. And trade in turtle meat in Bali has long been an<br>\ninternational issue. This trade has damaged the image of Bali's<br>\ntourism. If I am not mistaken, in 2000 some 300 travel agents<br>\nfrom Europe and America warned that they would boycott Bali if<br>\nthe Balinese continued to consume turtle meat for enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>According to some vendors, the turtles are supplied from<br>\nTanjung Benoa, north of Denpasar, which is notorious for its<br>\ntrade in turtles. It should be known that Tanjung Benoa has been<br>\nhighly dependent on tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent figures in Tanjung Benoa, however, invariably claim<br>\nthey only sell turtles for religious activities. God knows<br>\nwhether this is true.
