Try Sutrisno grilled over Priok riots<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP) Former vice president Try Sutrisno was grilled
\nfor 12 hours at the Attorney General's Office here on Thursday
\nfor his alleged involvement in the Tanjung Priok riots that
\nclaimed dozens and possibly hundreds of lives.<\/p>\n
Try was questioned because when the riots broke out on Sept.
\n12, 1984, he was the Jakarta military commander, whose
\njurisdiction included the port area of Tanjung Priok in North
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
"I came to meet the summons of the Attorney General's Office
\nout of respect for the law. I answered all questions fully and
\nhonestly from start to finish," he told reporters after the
\nquestioning, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
"I, as a former regional military commander, explained
\neverything in detail to the investigators. My responsibility as a
\nmilitary commander was supervising the activities of the Jakarta
\nmilitary command."<\/p>\n
The government said that only 18 people were killed in the
\nclash between the military and civilians in front of the Tanjung
\nPriok mosque, but relatives of the victims said that it claimed
\nthe lives of more than 400 people.<\/p>\n
Try said the prosecutors did not ask him about the
\nreconciliation agreement (islah) he had made recently with some
\nof the victims of the incident.<\/p>\n
"I have a moral obligation because I have already made an
\nislah. Islah is a holy agreement with pure intention to arrive at
\na worldly as well as divine solution. So do not compare it with
\npositive (written) law. Once again, islah is a religious matter,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Try and a number of other military officers implicated in the
\nTanjung Priok incident last March arrived at an islah settlement
\nwith about 80 relatives of the victims.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General's Office, however, said that the
\nsettlement should not hamper the legal proceedings.<\/p>",
