Try opens new school of marine studies<\/p>\n
JEPARA, Central Java (JP): Vice President Try Sutrisno
\ndedicated the School of Marine Studies of the University of
\nDiponegoro here yesterday.<\/p>\n
The school's campus, in the Awur Bay Village, cost Rp 8.5
\nbillion (US$4 million) to build. The campus includes the main
\nbuilding, a laboratory and housing facility for students and
\nstaff lecturers.<\/p>\n
Diponegoro University is a government-owned institution in
\nSemarang, capital of Central Java.<\/p>\n
Try, in his dedication speech, said the construction of the
\nnew facility is expected to bolster Indonesia's capability in
\nexploiting its rich marine resources, and strengthening the
\nnation's fishing industry in particular.<\/p>\n
As the world's largest archipelagic state, Indonesia possesses
\n5.8 million hectares of sea territory, which includes 2.7 million
\nhectares that comes within the economic exclusive zone, Try said.<\/p>\n
Try's entourage from Jakarta included Mrs. Try Sutrisno,
\nAttorney General Singgih, Minister of Education and Culture
\nWardiman Djojonegoro, Minister of Public Works Radinal Moochtar,
\nState Minister of Land Affairs Soni Harsono and State Minister of
\nEnvironment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja.<\/p>\n
Central Java Governor Soewardi and Diponegoro University
\nRector Muladi escorted the guests from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Earlier Try visited a local handicraft center in Jepara, which
\nis famed for its woodcarving.<\/p>\n
Jepara Regent Bambang Poerwadi said, in his welcoming speech,
\nwoodcarving is now the bread and butter industry of the regency,
\nwith over 2,400 handicraft units employing a total of 60,000
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
The area churns out Rp 201 billion ($96 million) worth of
\nwooden products, mostly furniture, a year. Its exports are worth
\nRp 90 billion a year and its market reaches 29 countries across
\nthe globe.<\/p>\n
Bambang presented Try with a cane made from three sacred woods
\ntaken from the Karimun Jawa Island in the Java Sea across Jepara
