Try offers himself middleman<\/p>\n

Former chairman of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI)
\nTry Sutrisno has offered to mediate in a conflict between the
\nassociation's regional chapters and the central board, a PBSI
\nofficial said.<\/p>\n
Twenty four regional chapters are calling for incumbent
\nchairman Chairul Tanjung to resign on the grounds he has presided
\nover the deterioration of the national badminton program.<\/p>\n
Chairul has also been blamed for failing to meet his promise
\nto channel money to provincial chapters for development programs.<\/p>\n
The calls come after the Indonesian men's team in April failed
\nto retain the Thomas Cup in Jakarta. Indonesia had held the cup
\nfive consecutive times.<\/p>\n
"Pak Try said it would be best for both parties to sit down
\ntogether and talk over the problem rather than holding an
\nextraordinary meeting," PBSI foreign affairs official Sulistyanto
\nsaid here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Chairul has already promised to hold an extraordinary meeting
\nwhere he would announce his resignation on the conditions an
\nacceptable replacement was available to step in.<\/p>\n
Saying he was still waiting for a suitable candidate, Chairul
\nhas insisted on staying in his post until after the Athens
\nOlympics in August.<\/p>\n
Sulistyanto said it would not be an easy task to hold an
\nextraordinary meeting given the requirement that it be attended
\nby two-thirds of the regional chapters and branches.<\/p>\n
Try, a former Indonesian vice president during the New Order
\nregime, was planning to invite Chairul and regional heads to
\ndiscuss the issue, Sulistyanto said.<\/p>\n
"He (Try Sutrisno) also said it would be up to the regional
\nchapters to decide whether to elect a new chairman for the
\nassociation. But it is important not to leave the seat vacant,"
\nSulistyanto said.<\/p>\n
Try served his chairmanship from 1985 to 1993, during which
\ntime Susi Susanti and Alan Budikusuma earned Indonesia its first
\nOlympic gold medals by winning the women's and men's singles
\nevents at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain.<\/p>\n
Regarded by many as one of the most successful PBSI managers,
\nTry now looks keen to impose his influence on the current board,
\nwhich has been distracted by the recent conflict.<\/p>\n
Sulistyanto said Try suggested a new chairman should fulfill
\nthree requirements.<\/p>\n
"He must be a sports lover but not necessarily be involved
\nwith badminton, have good access to the bureaucracy including
\nregional government and be good with money," he said.<\/p>\n
Sulistyanto said the chapters could submit possible candidate
\nnames to Try, who would judge whether they were capable of taking
\nthe chairman's job.<\/p>\n
Separately, PBSI vice chairman of regional development Aksa
\nMahmud said he would try to persuade regional chapters not to
\nproceed with the extraordinary meeting because of fears it could
\ncreate a split in the organization.<\/p>",
