Donald Trump and Xi Jinping discussed ways to enhance economic\ncooperation between the United States (US) and China at their meeting on\nThursday (14\/05), according to a summary released by the White\nHouse.<\/p>\n
The economic cooperation discussed by the two heads of state included\nexpanding access for US companies to the Chinese market and Chinese\ninvestments in US industries.<\/p>\n
Leaders from some of the largest US companies also attended part of\nthe meeting.<\/p>\n
Trump and Xi also discussed the importance of stopping the flow of\nfentanyl precursors to the US.<\/p>\n
According to the White House statement, both countries agreed that\nIran must not possess nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
The US statement also mentioned that both sides agreed the Strait of\nHormuz \u201cmust remain open to support the smooth flow of energy\u201d.<\/p>\n
During the talks, President Xi \u201cexpressed interest\u201d in buying more\nAmerican oil to reduce China\u2019s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz,\naccording to the White House statement.<\/p>\n
Xi warns of potential \u2018conflict\u2019 with the US over Taiwan<\/p>\n
Shortly after the talks began, Chinese state media released a\nstatement from President Xi Jinping warning of potential \u201cconflict\u201d with\nthe US over Taiwan. President Trump did not respond to reporters\u2019\nquestions on whether the Taiwan issue was also discussed.<\/p>\n
Trump described the outcome of his talks with President Xi Jinping as\n\u201cvery good\u201d, after the nearly two-hour meeting between the two heads of\nstate in Beijing, China, on Thursday (14\/05), concluded.<\/p>\n
However, he did not mention whether the Taiwan issue was also\ndiscussed.<\/p>\n
The island, which has its own government and is claimed by Beijing,\nis one of the main sources of tension, alongside trade tariffs,\ntechnology competition, and the Iran war.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the talks began, Chinese state media released Xi\u2019s\nstatement warning of potential \u201cconflict\u201d with the US over Taiwan.<\/p>\n

He also reportedly described the issue as \u201cthe most important issue\nin China-US relations\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf handled well, bilateral relations can remain generally stable. If\nnot handled properly, the two countries could clash or even fall into\nconflict, which would drive the entire China-US relationship into a very\ndangerous situation,\u201d Xi said, as quoted by state media.<\/p>\n
He added that Taiwan\u2019s independence \u201cfundamentally does not align\u201d\nwith peace in the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n
According to him, peace in the region is \u201cthe greatest point of\nconvergence between China and the US\u201d.<\/p>\n
As such, Taiwan is an island with its own government, but claimed by\nBeijing as part of its territory, and China does not rule out using\nforce to take it over.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Beijing has increased military exercises, including\nblockade simulations around the island, which have raised concerns in\nTaiwan and its allies.<\/p>\n
Last year, the Trump administration announced an $11 billion arms\nsale to Taiwan, which Beijing condemned and warned again ahead of\ntoday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n
As reported by BBC correspondent at the US State Department, Tom\nBateman, reporting from the meeting location, Trump and Xi walked slowly\ntogether towards the Temple of Heaven, while a guide explained the site\nin a soft voice.<\/p>\n
Other delegation members walked a few steps behind, closer to the\ngarden area, as the two leaders stood in front of the striking blue and\ngold imperial building, part of the temple complex where past emperors\nprayed for good harvests.<\/p>\n
Xi appeared to be smiling, while Trump seemed to listen attentively\nto the guide\u2019s explanation, before the Chinese leader invited him to a\nspot where they stood for photographs by photographers.<\/p>\n
