\u201cToday, two months after the largest military deployment and\naggression by the world\u2019s disruptors in this region, and the humiliating\ndefeat of the United States in its plans, a new chapter is underway for\nthe Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d said Khamenei in a message\nread on state television, as reported by AFP on Thursday (30\/4).<\/p>\n
Khamenei\u2019s message, his first public appearance since his appointment\non 9 March as Iran\u2019s new Supreme Leader, was delivered during the annual\nnational celebration of Persian Gulf Day in Iran.<\/p>\n
Mojtaba Khamenei became Supreme Leader after the US and Israel\nlaunched a massive attack campaign against Iran on 28 February, which\nkilled his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n
Last week, The New York Times quoted several unnamed Iranian\nofficials saying that the young Khamenei was \u201cseverely injured\u201d in the\nattack but remains \u201csharp-minded\u201d.<\/p>\n
In his message on Thursday (30\/4), he stated that US bases in the\nregion \u201cdo not even have the capacity to ensure their own security, let\nalone offer hope for securing their allies\u201d.<\/p>\n
He praised what he called Iran\u2019s \u201cnew legal framework and management\u201d\nover the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a major energy flashpoint, as a way\nto bring \u201ccomfort and progress\u201d to countries in the region.<\/p>\n
The strait has been a main point of conflict since the outbreak of\nthe Middle East war, with Iran allowing only a few ships to pass through\nthe waterway.<\/p>\n
