Iran subsequently retaliated by attacking Israeli territory\nand US military facilities in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Israel initially claimed that the \u201cpreemptive\u201d strikes\nwere necessary to counter threats they considered to stem from Iran\u2019s\nnuclear programme, but they soon made clear their desire to see a change\nof power in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed\nduring the first day of the military operation. The Islamic Republic of\nIran declared a national period of mourning lasting 40 days.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin characterised the killing of\nKhamenei as a cynical violation of international law.
