        "content": "<p>Truce signed in Batam hostilities<\/p>\n<p>BATAM, Riau: Leaders of ethnic groups involved in bloody<br>\nclashes in Batam have pledged a truce, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>Public transportation drivers from North Sumatra's Batak<br>\nethnic group and West Nusa Tenggara's Flores ethnic group were<br>\ninvolved in fatal clashes on Wednesday which have caused at least<br>\n11 fatalities and injured dozens.<\/p>\n<p>The fight descended into large-scale unrest, causing residents<br>\nto flee their homes and seek refuge in nearby police stations,<br>\nincluding in Barelang.<\/p>\n<p>Witnessing the signing of Thursday's truce were the Batam<br>\nIndustrial Authority's chief security officer Maj. Gen. Eric<br>\nWatulo and Batam's military chief Lt. Col. Yul Aviandi.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said they were not sure if provocateurs were<br>\ninvolved in fomenting the unrest, but the investigation<br>\ncontinues.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency also reported that dozens of houses in Batuaji<br>\nand Sagulung villages in West Batam subdistrict were set on fire<br>\nby several unidentified parties on Friday.
