Troop behaviour condemned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute has condemned
\nthe violent actions of Armed Forces (ABRI) members against the
\nTrisakti University students during their street rally on
\nWednesday in front of the Ministry of Defense and Security in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The institute's director, Apong Herlina, said a statement made
\navailable to The Jakarta Post on Thursday he wanted ABRI
\nCommander Gen. Wiranto, who is also Minister of Defense and
\nSecurity, to bring the riot troops to court for assaulting the
\nprotesting students.<\/p>\n
The institute also wanted Wiranto \"to ask for forgiveness from
\nthe (injured) students and their relatives and pay compensation
\nto the victims,\" he said.<\/p>\n
During Wednesday's noisy rally, with demonstrators demanding
\nthat ABRI immediately reveal the instigators of a recent series
\nof fatal shootings here, riot troops attacked students with
\nrattan sticks, leaving at least nine of the 300 participating
\nTrisakti students injured.<\/p>\n
Virginia S.S. of the university's information center said on
\nThursday three of the injured students were still in serious
\nconditions at Pertamina Hospital in Kebayoran Baru, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The riot officers violated the universal human right to free
\nspeech by severely and brutally attacking us,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The three students still receiving medical treatment, she
\nsaid, were Didi Nurachman, Rizqi Dwi Nanda, and Andra.<\/p>\n
\"Most of them have severe head injuries,\" Virginia said.<\/p>\n
Apong said his institute also strongly urged ABRI to
\nimmediately end its culture of violence and discriminative
\ntreatment of student protesters.<\/p>\n
\"We support the Trisakti students, who demand that Wiranto
\nfurther probe the (May 1998) shooting of Trisakti students and
\nbring the real killers to court,\" Apong said. (bsr)<\/p>",
