        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chinese authorities have fined and confiscated a\ntotal of US$770 million, or around Rp13.7 trillion, from online travel\nplatform Trip.com for abusing its dominant position in the domestic\nonline hotel booking market.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Channel News Asia report on Saturday (25 July) local\ntime, the regulator said that Trip.com used traffic allocation\nmechanisms, platform rules and technical measures to strike exclusive\ndeals with certain hotels as it sought to offer the lowest prices.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR)\nconfiscated 1.66 billion yuan in illegal profits and imposed a fine of\n3.52 billion yuan.<\/p>\n<p>The SAMR also ordered Trip.com to return 122 million yuan in booking\ndeposits that it said had been withheld by the company from hotel\noperators.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a Trip.com representative said the company would reflect\non the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sincerely accept and will fully comply with the decision, and\nwill strictly follow the regulator\u2019s requirements to systematically\nimplement every corrective step, ensuring that all measures are carried\nout effectively,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>China launched the antitrust investigation in January following\ncomplaints that Trip.com had imposed unfair terms on hotels and\nmanipulated prices.<\/p>\n<p>The penalty comes amid Beijing\u2019s efforts to curb unhealthy\ncompetition among internet platforms and excessive price competition,\nwhich authorities say has harmed businesses and fuelled deflationary\npressure.<\/p>",
