Tribes reject family planning<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: About half of the indigenous people in
\nCentral Sulawesi are rejecting the government's call to join the
\nfamily planning program because it goes against their mystic
\nbeliefs, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
During a recent trip to Saloya, a village where one isolated
\ntribe lives, Antara said many housewives considered
\ncontraceptives taboo.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Sutiri, a 35-year-old woman who has given birth seven
\ntimes, said each birth is considered a sacred gift from her
\nancestors and therefore cannot be rejected.<\/p>\n
She and many other women in the village have rejected all
\noffers of help, including medical treatment, from family planning
\nextension workers.<\/p>\n
Yunus Patriawan, the spokesman of the Central Sulawesi
\nNational Family Planning Office, said isolation, poor access to
\nvillages and a language barrier are some of the difficulties
\nencountered by his employees.<\/p>\n
Of the approximately 10,000 families of indigenous, largely
\nnomadic people in Central Sulawesi, the government has only
\nmanaged to settle 3,000 of them. (emb)<\/p>",
