`Triangle' takes shape<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): A proposed \"growth triangle\" encompassing
\neconomically lagging parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand is
\nslowly becoming reality, with governments and private firms
\nshowing a readiness to sign up.<\/p>\n
A report forged by 25 teams of consultants brought together by
\nthe Asian Development Bank (ADB) has now listed over 50 policies
\nand schemes needed to create the project, known as the Indonesia-
\nMalaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT.)<\/p>\n
The goal is to integrate the economies of northern Sumatra and
\nAceh in Indonesia, northern Malaysia and southern Thailand in a
\nbid to emulate the fabled growth of the China-Taiwan-Hong Kong
\ntriangle.<\/p>\n
By harnessing the regions' respective strengths, gross
\ndomestic product (GDP) in the triangle could rise by 7.2 percent
\nannually over 10 years, according to the report.<\/p>\n
John Newton, a team leader in the drafting of the document,
\nsaid trade and investment liberalization was a focus of their
\nrecommendations but cautioned that implementation would be
\ndifficult and many ideas may not be accepted by the three
\ngovernments.<\/p>",
