Trial of suspected E. Java killers to start this week<\/p>\n
SURABAYA (JP): East Java chief prosecutor Adenan Kasian said
\non Monday that trials would begin this week of people suspected
\nof involvement in various murders in at least 11 of the
\nprovinces' regencies over the past months.<\/p>\n
Speaking after a roll call of the East Java Provincial Police,
\nAdenan said his office had prepared dossiers on 54 of 157
\nsuspects and submitted them to the court.<\/p>\n
\"Fifty-two dossiers were submitted to the Banyuwangi District
\nCourt and two others to the Bangil and Pasuruan district courts.
\nSix of the dossiers have been declared complete and trials will
\nimmediately commence,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that the public was impatient to see legal
\nsanctions imposed on perpetrators.<\/p>\n
Nearly 200 people have fallen victim in the killing spree.
\nMost were suspected of practicing black magic while others were
\nsuspected of being the mysterious killers, including three police
\nofficers on Saturday and Sunday. The murderers of the first group
\nhave been dubbed \"ninjas\" after their black outfits and stealth.
\nTheir victims have mostly been Moslem clerics.<\/p>\n
When asked about the mastermind of the murder spree, Adenan
\nsaid quickly: \"Please, wait and see.\" He said his office was
\nfocusing its investigation on the legal process of the case and
\nhad yet to probe nonlegal factors behind the murders.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, East Java Police chief Maj. Gen. M. Dayat called on
\nthe government to honor the three police detectives who were
\nkilled in Bangkalan, Madura, by an angry mob who suspected them
\nof being \"ninja-killers.\"<\/p>\n
\"We suggest they be awarded with the title Bhayangkara Heroes
\nand posthumously promoted from second sergeants to chief
\nsergeants,\" Dayat said, adding that the police would also pay
\ncompensation to the officers' families.<\/p>\n
The three victims were Second Sgt. Yunus A. Parembong, Second
\nSgt. Hadiri and Second Sgt. Hadiri. The incident occurred when
\nMS, a man wanted in connection with receiving stolen goods,
\nattempted to evade capture by shouting that he was being chased
\nby \"ninjas\", referring to five detectives who were nearing MS'
\nhouse in Kajuana village. They had a suspected motorcycle thief,
\nAL, with them.<\/p>\n
Hearing the shout, residents surrounded the detectives and
\nstarted beating them. Yunus was beaten to death on the spot while
\nhis four colleagues escaped. But the following day villagers
\nfound Dahiri and Dahlan and beat them to death.<\/p>\n
Dayat said that both AL and MS were involved in the murder
\nspree and that police, in cooperation with villagers, would work
\nhard until they were captured.<\/p>\n
Four police squads from Bangkalan and Surabaya have been
\ndeployed to search for and capture the two.<\/p>\n
Dayat also regretted the incident, saying residents should
\nhave handed over the suspected killers to the police.<\/p>\n
On Monday the village was still tense following the murdering
\nof the officers.<\/p>\n
In Central Java alone eight people have been killed by angry
\nresidents. In contrast to victims of other mob killings,
\nprovincial police chief Maj. Gen. Nurfaizi said the eight were
\nactual \"ninjas\" suspected of intimidating clerics and Koranic
\nteachers. However, he confirmed that most victims were those with
\nmental disorders, killed when they were search for food in
