Trial date set for 12 accused students<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court will soon open
\nthe trial of 12 National University students accused of
\nassaulting members of the college's Student Regiment last
\nOctober.<\/p>\n
Judge Moegihardjo, who will preside at the hearings, said the
\nstudents would be split into two groups of six defendants each.
\nThe trial of the first group will begin on Jan. 19 and the second
\non Jan. 23.<\/p>\n
The students have been accused of burning the regiment command
\npost and attacking some of the members guarding it.<\/p>\n
The dossiers prepared by the state prosecutors charge the 12
\nstudents with violating Article 170 of the Criminal Code, which
\nstipulates that a person who intentionally assaults another, or
\ndestroys property, could face maximum imprisonment of five-and-
\na-half years.<\/p>\n
The attack on the regiment members came at the peak of
\ndiscontent among university students at the rough behavior of
\nmany members of the regiment, whom they felt often bullied other
\ncollege students in the name of discipline.<\/p>\n
The existence of the student regiments at most universities
\nhave been questioned following reports of brawls at colleges
\ninvolving the regiment members. Following the criticism, the
\ngovernment, early this month, agreed to restructure and place the
\nregiments under the supervision of the ministries of defense and
\nsecurity, home affairs and education and culture. Previously, the
\nregiments were supervised only by the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture.<\/p>\n
Despite the criticism of the student regiment, no members have
\nbeen tried in connection with the behavior that led to the
\nattacks.<\/p>\n
The 12 students to be tried in South Jakarta next week are
\nmembers of Himpala, an association of nature lovers at the
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
The 12 defendants are B. Satrio Widyanarto, Yudi Jamhur, Rakai
\nAryadipa Erlangga, Dharmawan, Budi Murdiyanto, Reza Pahlevi,
\nSyech Aljufri, Agus Heryana Anirun, Mulyono Sugito, Kusnadi
\nDarisan, Sudrajad Trisna and Indra Mulia Ismed Kamal.<\/p>\n
The brawl, amid a celebration of the university's 45th
\nanniversary, left five students injured.<\/p>\n
The fighting reportedly was in retaliation to an attack on one
\nof the nature lovers by regiment members over a trivial road
\naccident outside the campus.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors for the two trials will be H.P. Silitonga and
