The Trenggalek Regency Government, together with the Trenggalek\nPolice, is developing garlic cultivation in highland areas as part of\nefforts to support national self-sufficiency and reduce Indonesia\u2019s\ndependence on imports of the commodity.<\/p>\n
Trenggalek Regent Mochamad Nur Arifin and Trenggalek Police Chief\nAKBP Rizky Tri Putra Erryka Adi Wijaya carried out garlic planting in\nKaranganyar Village, Pule District, Trenggalek, East Java, on\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Regent Nur Arifin said the planting was an initiative of National\nPolice Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, implemented simultaneously in\n17 provinces, including Trenggalek.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an initiative from the National Police Chief, and at the\nregional level it is carried out by the Police Chief. We all know that\nour dependence on imports, particularly garlic, is still very high,\u201d\nArifin said.<\/p>\n
According to him, Trenggalek has the potential to develop garlic\nbecause several areas are located at altitudes of around 700 to 1,000\nmetres above sea level.<\/p>\n
However, garlic cultivation remains a challenge because the commodity\nhas not been widely cultivated by farmers in Trenggalek.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe therefore welcome this, although it certainly presents its own\nchallenges. Our community, particularly in Trenggalek, is not yet\naccustomed to planting garlic. But with areas at altitudes of around 700\nto 1,000 metres above sea level, we have potential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In the initial stage, the government prepared 150 kilograms of Lumbu\nHijau variety garlic seeds for planting on 0.2 hectares of land in\nKaranganyar Village. Eight farmers from several farmer groups were\ninvolved in the planting.<\/p>\n
Arifin said the planting results would be evaluated in about three\nmonths. If successfully harvested, garlic cultivation development would\nbe expanded.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it must be harvested, so that food self-sufficiency to reduce\nimports, particularly in garlic, can truly be achieved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He expressed hope that increased domestic garlic production could\nreduce dependence on imported supplies while helping to maintain price\nstability and control inflation of the commodity.<\/p>\n
Trenggalek Police Chief AKBP Rizky Tri Putra Erryka Adi Wijaya said\nthe garlic planting was part of a programme implemented simultaneously\nin 17 provinces.<\/p>\n
In East Java, the programme was implemented in four regencies:\nMalang, Pasuruan, Magetan, and Trenggalek.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlhamdulillah, today we are carrying out garlic planting in 17\nprovinces. The centre is in Sembalun Village, East Lombok. In East Java,\nfour regencies were appointed: Malang Regency, Pasuruan Regency, Magetan\nRegency, and Trenggalek Regency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In Trenggalek, the initial planting was carried out on 0.20 hectares\nof land. If the harvest results in the next three months show good\noutcomes, development is targeted to reach 1.5 hectares.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe altitude is appropriate and the seeds are available. We will\nobserve the results over the next three months. Our hope is the same as\nwhat the Regent conveyed, that we can achieve garlic self-sufficiency\nbecause this is one of the commodities dependent on imports,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Head of the Trenggalek Agriculture and Food Agency Imam Rohadi said\nthe highland areas in the region have potential for garlic development,\nparticularly Pule and Bendungan Districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo in the Pule area and onwards to Puyung.
