Treated wood for houses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Association for Indonesian Timber Treatment
\nhas called on the government to issue a regulation requiring
\nhousing developers to use treated wood in their buildings and to
\nimpose penalties on violators.<\/p>\n
Association secretary-general Bing Suharya said the Ministry
\nof Public Housing promised that such a regulation would be issued
\nin August but that it has not yet eventuated.<\/p>\n
Currently, he said, only 10 percent of Indonesian housing
\ndevelopers use treated timber for their buildings.<\/p>\n
In neighboring countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia and
\nThailand, the use of such timber is already mandatory, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
He said the use of treated timber would benefit both consumers
\nand the government because it would reduce the use of freshly
\nlogged timber -- and consequently promote sustainable forestry --
\nand help consumers to save money which would otherwise be spent
\non replacing untreated timber.<\/p>\n
Bing said the cost of treating timber is only Rp 50,000
\n(US$22) per cubic meter, meaning an additional Rp 1,000 for each
