Treason suspect on hunger strike<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Papua: Treason suspect Felip Karma has been on a
\nhunger strike at the Jayapura Police Station since Dec. 3.<\/p>\n
Felip is accused of leading a rally on Dec. 1 to commemorate
\nthe declaration of Papuan independence.<\/p>\n
The suspect also has refused to answer questions from police
\ninvestigators. He communicates with his lawyers through signs or
\nby writing his responses.<\/p>\n
A doctor monitoring Felip's health, Samuel Maripadang, said on
\nTuesday the suspect was in danger of dehydration and digestive
\nproblems if he continued the hunger strike. The doctor did not
\nrecommend, however, that Felip be admitted to the hospital.<\/p>\n
Felip said in a written statement that he went on strike to
\nprotest the use of violence by officers during his arrest. He
\nsaid the police handcuffed him and beat him during his arrest.<\/p>\n
Police arrested Felip and Yusak Pakage on Dec. 1 after they
\nallegedly raised the Morning Star separatist flag and led people
\nin observing the declaration of Papuan independence. -- JP<\/p>",
