        "content": "<p>Travel ban against Sofyan lifted<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The foreign travel ban against Sofyan Wanandi<br>\nwas officially lifted here on Thursday after the Attorney<br>\nGeneral's Office received guarantees from his lawyers and the<br>\nbusinessman himself.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to revoke the ban was issued after Sofyan<br>\nprovided testimony at the Attorney General's Office on an alleged<br>\ncorruption case earlier in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>\"I came here to clear charges laid against me... because I<br>\nwant to see the supremacy of the law,\" he said after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The revocation of the ban was stated in letter No. KEP-<br>\n222\/O\/DP.2\/11\/1999 signed by the deputy attorney general for<br>\nintelligence, M. Yusuf Kartanegara.<\/p>\n<p>Sofyan, the head of the Gemala Group, has repeatedly denied<br>\ninvolvement in an alleged scandal which involved defrauding state<br>\nbanks of up to US$16 million.<\/p>\n<p>Many believe that the allegations raised against Sofyan were<br>\npolitically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>The president of Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) Widigdo Sukarman<br>\nhas rejected allegations that Sofyan defrauded the state bank.<\/p>\n<p>Sofyan returned on Oct. 22 to Indonesia following the election<br>\nof the new government.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had been in the United States for approximately one<br>\nyear for medical reasons.
