Transport strike paralyzes Manila<\/p>\n
MANILA (UPI): A metropolitan Manila-wide jeepney strike
\nmomentarily left hundreds of commuters stranded yesterday, as the
\ndrivers of the Philippines' main mode of public transportation
\nprotested a recent government move to hike by 400 percent the
\nfine for traffic violations.<\/p>\n
The striking jeepney drivers displayed yesterday morning red
\nplacards and banners bearing their grievances and badgered those
\nwho refused to join their protest action.<\/p>\n
But the strike fizzled out in the afternoon, the police said,
\nas the government used back-up passenger vehicles to take the
\njeepneys' place.<\/p>\n
The police was unable to give an official estimate of the
\nnumber of strikers, but Maj. Gil Hitosis of the Traffic
\nManagement Command said the figure may be between 500 to 1,000.<\/p>\n
The Movement for Transportation Organization, the country's
\nlargest jeepney operators' union, earlier demanded a review of a
\nplan to increase the fine for traffic violations that a local
\ngovernment agency wants to implement.<\/p>",
