Trans-Sumatra highway paralyzed<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: Sections of the Eastern and Western Trans-
\nSumatra Highway connecting Riau to other provinces in Sumatra
\nhave been paralyzed since Friday, because of floods and
\nlandslides.<\/p>\n
A section of the road that connects Pekanbaru with West
\nSumatra in the district of Koto Kampar in Kampar regency was
\nflooded, and landslides had obstructed several sections of the
\nroad.<\/p>\n
Idrus, a truck driver, said he went back to Pekanbaru on
\nFriday because several sections of the road leading to Padang,
\nthe capital of West Sumatra, were submerged and hit by
\nlandslides.<\/p>\n
The road connecting the province with Jambi was also
\nparalyzed, because several sections of the road in Pelalawan
\nregency were underwater.<\/p>\n
Pelalawan land transportation office chief Darwis Alkadam
\nconfirmed it was impossible to go through the regency to Jambi
\nbecause of the flood caused by the overflowing Kampar River,
\nwhich had been rising since incessant rains began Monday. -- JP<\/p>",
