Trans-ASEAN gas studied<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): Trans Energy of France is studying the natural
\ngas industry in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) to determine the feasibility of a trans-ASEAN pipeline, a
\nFilipino energy official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
ASEAN groups natural gas exporters Brunei, Indonesia and
\nMalaysia along with the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.<\/p>\n
The region is one of the most economically dynamic in the
\nworld and is believed to have sufficient natural gas reserves to
\nmeet growing energy demand.<\/p>\n
Philippine Undersecretary of Energy Rufino Bomasang said the
\nstudy was commissioned about two months ago by the ASEAN-European
\nCommunity Energy Management Training and Research Center based in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Bomasang, a member of a steering committee of the center, said
\nhe expected the study to be finished in a year, but did not give
\nany cost.<\/p>\n
He said the study took off from a proposal about four years
\nago to build a trans-ASEAN pipeline to optimize the use of the
\nregion's natural gas resources.<\/p>\n
Bomasang said the study aims to \"review the present and future
\ngas supply and demand in each country and in the entire region
\nand the existing logistical facilities ... to be able to
\ntransport gas from the producing countries to the using
\ncountries.\"<\/p>",
