        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Misuse of the pain relief medication tramadol can cause\nserious health effects, ranging from anxiety to tremors, prompting\nhealth experts to urge the public not to consume the drug without\nmedical supervision.<\/p>\n<p>Prof.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Ari Fahrial Syam, Professor and Consultant of\nGastroenterology Hepatology at the Department of Internal Medicine,\nFaculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia-Cipto Mangunkusumo General\nHospital, stated that tramadol is a medication used by doctors to\nalleviate mild to moderate pain and is often combined with paracetamol.\nThe drug is classified as a restricted medication because of its\npotential to cause addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTramadol is a restricted drug because it is frequently misused and\ncan cause addiction or dependence. Once addicted, patients will continue\nrequesting the drug and will experience insomnia, anxiety, muscle pain\nand tremors,\u201d Ari said when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on\nWednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ari, these effects emerge because tramadol is capable of\nreducing pain or discomfort in the body. As a result, some people\nconsume the drug not for medical purposes, but to obtain a particular\nsensation.<\/p>\n<p>If usage continues without medical supervision, the risk of\ndependence can emerge. Once experiencing addiction, patients typically\ncontinue seeking the drug and experience various symptoms when they do\nnot consume it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis (tramadol) is a restricted drug and must be obtained with a\ndoctor\u2019s prescription. It must have a doctor\u2019s prescription. Therefore,\nit cannot be sold freely,\u201d Ari emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Drug and Food Authority (BPOM) stated on Tuesday (10\nMarch) that it was investigating allegations of free-market tramadol\nsales and would take strict action against misuse of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>A video that went viral on social media reported that several shops\nin East Jakarta were pelted with firecrackers by residents because they\nwere allegedly selling tramadol freely.<\/p>",
