        "content": "<p>Training available for dismissed workers<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Medium-scale Enterprises<br>\nAssociation in cooperation with the Matsushita Gobel Education<br>\nFoundation began training 140 dismissed workers on Monday to<br>\nbecome entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Association chairman Ilhamy Elias said the training was aimed<br>\nat improving the workers' skills and broadening their knowledge<br>\nto provide them with opportunities during the economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\"By improving their skills and knowledge we hope the workers<br>\ncan be absorbed by companies. Others also can be expected to<br>\ncreate their own businesses.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said during the five-day training course, the workers,<br>\nmostly senior high school graduates, would learn management,<br>\nleadership and other skills, such as how to get a bank loan.<\/p>\n<p>He also said participants in the course would receive a<br>\ntransportation allowance of Rp 10,000 a day (US$1.10) and Rp 1.25<br>\nmillion in capital at the end of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\"We hope participants work in groups to strengthen any<br>\nbusinesses they may form and run.\"<\/p>\n<p>Ilhamy said the association planned to train at least 400<br>\ndismissed workers this year, adding that the plan was part of the<br>\nassociation's goal of improving human resources in the city and<br>\ncreating new small and medium-scale businesspeople.<\/p>\n<p>\"Many people say small and medium-scale enterprises can<br>\nsurvive the economic crisis better than big companies.\"<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the foundation's training manager, Dharma<br>\nDesvandri, said the workers were being taught the latest business<br>\npractices.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are teaching them more practical knowledge related to the<br>\nbusiness sector than theoretical knowledge,\" Dharma said. The<br>\ntraining is taking place at the foundation's building in<br>\nelectronic manufacturing firm National Gobel's complex in East<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said lecturers and other facilities needed for the course<br>\nwere provided by the foundation, which was established in May<br>\n1979.<\/p>\n<p>Since its establishment, the foundation has trained 46,584<br>\npeople. Training has included technical skills, manufacturing<br>\nmanagement, work ethics and discipline as well as foreign<br>\nlanguages, he said. (jun)<\/p>",
