        "content": "<p>Trained elephants in poor condition<\/p>\n<p>MESUJI, Lampung: The lives of two domesticated elephants,<br>\nwhich have been trained to plough rice fields, are in danger<br>\nbecause of poor care by farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Both elephants have been used in a pilot project, in Brabasan<br>\nvillage, Perwakilan Tajungraya district, in northern Lampung<br>\nsince 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Saleh Mulyono, the head of Perwakilan Tanjungraya district,<br>\nsaid the maintenance of the two animals is so poor because it is<br>\ndependent on the income of their owners who sell the ploughing<br>\nservice to local farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\"But the fee is based on voluntary contributions,\" he was<br>\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency reported that the two elephants' health is<br>\npoor and both are very thin. The budget of the pilot project is<br>\nrunning out, Saleh said.<\/p>\n<p>Their maintenance costs between Rp 7,500 ($3.19) and Rp 10,000<br>\n($4.26) per day, and this does not include the tamer's monthly<br>\nsalary of Rp 40,000, he said.
