Traffic police during flood<\/p>\n

When many parts of Jakarta were inundated by incessant rains
\nover the weekend, traffic personnel both from the police and the
\ncity land transportation agency (DLLAJR) were strikingly absent
\nto regulate the traffic. They were also sorely missed as they
\ncould have informed road users of flooded areas.<\/p>\n
Consequently, irresponsible people harassed hapless passers-by
\nin areas where traffic slowed down or came to a standstill due to
\nthe high water. On Jl. Daan Mogot in West Jakarta buses got water
\nshowered on them by the pailful and stones thrown at them. Other
\npeople even waylaid certain streets by putting wooden benches
\nacross telling motorists that the area was closed due to deep
\nflood water. But the benches were removed as soon as money
\nchanged hands. The same treatment was accorded to motorcycle
\ntaxis (ojeg).<\/p>\n
This is valuable experience to avoid the recurrence of such
\nsituations. The related traffic agencies should instruct their
\npersonnel to continue safeguarding areas with heavy traffic, also
\nduring floods.<\/p>\n
