Indonesia's Traffic Police (Korlantas) have implemented a comprehensive digital technology scheme to manage traffic flow during the 2026 Eid mudik exodus, utilising radar systems, traffic counting technology, and real-time monitoring to optimise traffic flow on toll roads.

Batam — Indonesia’s Traffic Police Corps (Korlantas) is implementing
a comprehensive traffic management scheme for toll roads during the 2026
Eid mudik exodus, supported by digital technology to ensure smooth
travel for the public.

The Head of Korlantas, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, stated in
a briefing received in Jakarta on Sunday that the police force is
prepared to manage traffic flow on toll roads during peak mudik and
return periods.

“Korlantas uses digital technology when implementing traffic
engineering management, including lane transfers, monitoring,
contraflow, national one-way systems, and so forth,” said Agus.

The two-star police general explained that contraflow application
during mudik and return periods is based on specific parameters to
ensure the policy is well-targeted and effectively facilitates vehicle
flow.

“The contraflow traffic engineering has parameters guiding our
implementation, so we can smoothly facilitate the journey of
holidaymakers, including the mudik exodus,” he stated.

According to him, one key parameter is the number of vehicles per
hour monitored through radar and traffic counting systems.

This parameter, he continued, is observable from radar readings: if
traffic consistently reaches 4,500 to 5,000 vehicles per hour,
contraflow on one lane is activated.

“Similarly, once the figure reaches 6,400 vehicles, we will implement
contraflow on two lanes,” he explained.

Additionally, national one-way and partial one-way policies will be
implemented based on real-time traffic monitoring data updates.

“We will implement national one-way or partial one-way in national
one-way zones. Obviously, the latest updates from traffic monitoring
technology, whether through precision drones or radar at Jasa Marga,
will guide these decisions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police have also prepared a contingency plan: should
traffic counting show extremely high volumes and two-lane contraflow is
already in place, the national one-way option will be activated.

He emphasised that if traffic counting reaches sufficiently high
levels, including two-lane contraflow, the national one-way system will
be implemented.

“This is how Korlantas operates, utilising technology and updated
traffic counting, with all traffic metrics calculated through
technological means,” he noted.

Agus stressed that Korlantas does not merely issue advisories but
operates based on data-driven and real-time technology systems to
guarantee smooth and safe conditions for the public during the mudik
period.

“Korlantas does not simply advise, but rather works through systems
we have built based on real-time data and technology to ensure smooth
mudik and return journeys,” he stated.

“The state is present to ensure safety in terms of crime prevention
and smooth traffic flow,” added Agus.
",
