Traffic jams hit Bogor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Traffic came to a standstill on Bogor's main
\nroads yesterday as hundreds of vehicles queued near city hall to
\ncollect relatives returning from the haj pilgrimage in Mecca.<\/p>\n
Many vehicles were trapped in the main jam for hours, Antara
\nreported, while many smaller roads were also packed with
\nvehicles.<\/p>\n
The situation was exacerbated by the fact that most of the
\nfamily members, awaiting the returning pilgrims since yesterday
\nmorning, had not been allowed to enter the city hall building. As
\na result thousands of pedestrians mingled with the hundreds of
\nvehicles in the streets near the hall.<\/p>\n
The deployment of additional police to direct the traffic
\naround the collection point proved insufficient to prevent the
\ntraffic jam. Many drivers reportedly drove their cars recklessly,
\nignoring police officers' instructions.<\/p>\n
Pedestrians watched the arrivals from the road and crossed it
\nwithout regard to crossing zones, thereby adding to the chaos.<\/p>\n
Blame for the mayhem was placed on the Bogor city
\nadministration's selection of the arrival point in the center of
\nthe town.<\/p>\n
\"If they'd selected another place, the traffic jam might have
\nbeen avoided,\" said one official of the city administration who
