Traffic crackdown nets 109 bus crews<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The chief of the South Jakarta office of the
\nCity Land Transportation Control Agency, Bubung Burhana,
\nannounced that a total of 109 bus crews were netted during a
\nrecent traffic crackdown on public transit vehicles in that
\nmayoralty.<\/p>\n
\"Of the 109 buses, 48 belong to the Metro Mini transportation
\ncompany and 29 to the Kopaja transit service. The crews of the
\nbuses will be brought to court soon on charges of breaching
\ntraffic discipline,\" Bubung told reporters over the weekend.<\/p>\n
He said that the operation was fully supported by South
\nJakarta Mayor Pardjoko.<\/p>\n
Pardjoko himself, together with agency officials, personally
\njoined the operation on Thursday and supervised traffic flow on
\nJl. Tarunajaya, where his office is located. The mayor gave stern
\nwarnings to bus crews who were not wearing their uniforms while
\non duty.<\/p>\n
Bubung said that since President Soeharto launched the
\nNational Discipline Movement on National Awakening Day, May 20,
\nhe has taken stern measures against any of his subordinates found
\nimposing unauthorized fees on bus crews at inter-city bus
\nterminals, including those at Lebak Bulus, Pasar Minggu and Blok
\nM.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja vowed that he would wipe
\nout the rampant collection of illegal levies at inter-city bus
\nterminals throughout the capital. The governor said that
\nofficials of the city administration would not tolerate the
\nunchecked growth of such practices.<\/p>\n
Surjadi made the remarks in response to reports that the
\ncollection of unauthorized fees was still rampant at the vehicle
\ntesting centers and at bus terminals.<\/p>\n
The illegal fee collection reportedly involves not only
\nbrokers, but also officers of the agency. (31)<\/p>",
