Traffic cop passes chief's bribery test<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto
\nrecently rode his Harley Davidson motorcycle incognito, to test
\none of his traffic officers in Senayan. After purposefully going
\nthe wrong way in a one-way street, Hindarto tried to bribe his
\nway out of trouble.<\/p>\n
Much to his pleasure, the officer, who did not recognize the
\npolice chief under the helmet, refused the Rp 50,000 bill he
\ntried to pass in place of his driving license, which he claimed
\nhe had left at home.<\/p>\n
Recalling the incident he had on Sunday a week ago, Hindarto
\ntold reporters that the officer then asked for some kind of
\nidentification.<\/p>\n
\"So I took out my ID card and gave it to him,\" Hindarto said.
\n\"After carefully inspecting the card, the officer stood to
\nattention and gave me a military salute.\"<\/p>\n
Hindarto, whose favorite past time includes riding on his big
\nbikes, did not identify the officer that had passed the bribery
\ntest.<\/p>\n
He also praised the officer for following proper procedures in
\nstopping traffic violators, including informing the motorist of
\nthe error he had committed.<\/p>\n
Traffic police have earned a bad reputation following various
\nreports in the past that they would let off, for a price,
\nmotorists who violated traffic regulations.<\/p>\n
Hindarto, whose term as chief of city police ends soon, has
\nbeen campaigning to clean up the image of the police and has
\nthreatened stiff penalties for any officer found accepting
\nbribes.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the traffic officer in the Sunday incident had
\nlet him off without punishment because of his rank, Hindarto's
\nchief spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko quickly hushed the
\nreporters and said, \"the chief was testing the officer.\"<\/p>\n
When another reporter asked whether Hindarto had been
\ninsistence enough in trying to bribe the officer, the police
